Boston University Alumni & Washington Post Reporters
Kevin Merida & Michael Fletcher Speak About Their Upcoming Book on Justice Clarence Thomas
Lecture and Book Signing
Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas is a new biography by Washington Post writers, Kevin Merida and Michael Fletcher. It is a haunting portrait of an isolated and bitter man, savagely reviled by much of the black community, not entirely comfortable in white society, internally wounded by his passage from a broken family and rural poverty in Georgia to elite educational institutions to the pinnacle of judicial power. Supreme Discomfort, an important new book, offers a window into a man who straddles two different worlds and is uneasy in both -whose divided personality and conservative political philosophy will deeply influence American life for years to come.
The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception at the Boston University Washington Center, 2807 Connecticut Ave. NW; Washington, DC. For questions or directions call 202-756-7800 or e-mail budc@bu.edu
The event is free and open to all alumni.
Pre-release copies of Supreme Discomfort will be available for purchase at the event.

Meet at Sun Trust Bank plaza at 18th Street and Columbia Road, NW
During the Civil War Adams Morgan was a sprawling cattle farm and enslaved African Americans worked the land. But they were about to become free. Take a walk through this dramatic time from Kalorama Park, where the enslaved Prout family lived, to Walter Pierce Park, where Howard University archeologists are documenting DCs most active African American cemetery following the Civil War. The Civil War Cadets from Marie Reed Elementary School will perform a drill in Walter Pierce Park, and the archeologists will be on hand to discuss their work.
This walk is part of a citywide weekend of 60 free walking tours — Walkingtown, D.C— sponsored by Cultural Tourism DC. For more information, visit: www.WalkingTownDC.org or email Heather Benson at benson.heather@gmail.com

8:45 am 12:30 pm : Clean Up

@ Buffalo Billiards in Dupont Circle
Greater DC Cares Servathon
For the fourth year in a row, BU alumni will join thousands of volunteers across the region to take part in the DC Cares Servathon where well help improve our community. The workday is short, only 9am to 12:30pm, and then many of us will go to a big party with free burgers, dogs and beer. This could be the most fun youll ever have helping others!
This years project is Walter Pierce Community Park Clean Up at 2630 Adams Mill Rd.- a five minute walk from Woodley Park Metro on the Red Line.
Walter Pierce Park is a multi-use park located in the heart of Adams Morgan, one of Washington, D.C.'s most diverse neighborhoods. The park reflects that diversity and serves as meeting place for the entire community. The park features a large multi-purpose playing field, basketball court, community garden, children's play area, chess tables, a picnic area and D.C.'s first fenced in dog exercise area. Like many inner-city parks, Walter Pierce is overused and under-maintained; it relies heavily on volunteers for care. The hillside leading down from Walter Pierce to Rock Creek is littered with trash.
Walter Pierce Park also has historical connections to Massachusetts and its contributions to the abolition of slavery. The land where Walter Pierce Park now sits was owned from 1823 to 1870 by President John Quincy Adams and his heirs - a family whose political influence helped end slavery in the United States. Walter Pierce was the site of D.C.'s most active African American cemetery following the Civil War and is the resting place of many former enslaved people who died free. There are no headstones left in the park, which was also the site of Washington's first Quaker burial ground, founded in 1807.
Howard University Professor Mark Mack is leading a team of students this year in a non-invasive archeological survey of the historic Colored Union Benevolent Association Cemetery to determine where graves might still exist in Walter Pierce Park, and to make recommendations about how best to protect them. Professor Mack, who was science director of the now-completed New York African Burial Ground project in Lower Manhattan, also is working with the Adams Morgan community to raise public awareness of the cemetery, so that it will be remembered and cared for by future generations of Washingtonians.
Registration is easy, but the deadline is April 27th! Theres a $20 registration fee to cover t-shirts, water, and project supplies like paint, mulch and tools. Servathon is Greater DC Cares biggest fundraiser; this years goal is to raise $400,000 to support community volunteerism year-round. Like a Walkathon, Servathon volunteers raise pledges to support their day of service. Greater DC Cares provides information and tools to help you in this effort.
Register for the BU Alumni Club of Washington, DC Team at www.servathon2007.kintera.org/dcbualumclub
For more details, check out www.servathon.org or email Heather Benson at benson.heather@gmail.com
You can find out more about Walter Pierce Park and the archeological project by going to www.washingtonpost.com, and looking for articles that appeared in the Metro section on July 5, 2006, "In Search of Peace for an Old Resting Place," and in the District Extra on October 26, 2006, "Surveying an Exposed History of Black Lives."

"From Slavery to Freedom in Adams Morgan" Walking Tour
This tour is part of Cultural Tourism DC's citywide "Fall Walkingtown" event. Guides will lead walkers to Kalorama Park, which at the start of the Civil War was the center of a large cattle farm owned by John Little and worked by 12 enslaved African Americans. Historical research tells us much about people on the Little farm, including a dramatic attempt by one young woman to escape slavery. We'll walk from Kalorama Park to Walter Pierce Park, where we'll discuss Cliffburne Hospital Barracks, the Quaker and Colored Union Benevolent Association cemeteries, and the Howard University archeological project in the park.
The tour will begin at 18th & Columbia Roads NW, next to the Farmers Market. For more information visit: www.culturaltourismdc.org or email Heather Benson at benson.heather@gmail.com

Pumpkin Patch Visit
Cox Farms, Centreville Fall Festival and Market
For the past couple of years, a few of the alums have made Cox Farms an annual Fall event for family and friends. This year we wanted to publicize and open up our informal get together to all the BU alums. Because Cox Farms requires a 75 person minimum to schedule a formal event, we thought it would be more appropriate to make this a simple and informal gathering. If you haven't been to Cox Farms, it truly is a great venue before Halloween for everyone especially children. Alumni club members will be meeting inside the farm at 10:00 am. If you are interested in meeting up, please email Heather Benson at benson.heather@gmail.com. We hope to see you there!
Admission - $13 per person (2 years and over) to be paid on-site at Cox Farms Ticket booth
Admission includes: unlimited hayrides, 5 giant slides, rope swings, farm animals and babies, 90 acres of fun, Billy Goat Village, hay tunnels, delicious apples and fresh cider to enjoy while you are there- and a patch pumpkin to take home!
A special area for our youngest visitors includes: Fairyland Castle slides, Pooh's House, Candy Hill, Wooden Train, Kiddy Rope Swing and more!
For more information, visit: www.coxfarms.com. Cox Farms is located at 15621 Braddock Rd., Centreville, VA 20120.

Alumni vs. Students Sporting Event- Who Will Reign Supreme?
The National Mall
Are you ready for some football?! Current BU students studying in DC for the semester will be taking on local alumni in either kickball, volleyball, touch football or Frisbee on the National Mall. Which will win out, youth or experience?
If you are interested in playing or in cheering on the alumni team, please email Chelsey at budcalumni@gmail.com. We're collecting votes on what sport to play, so include your vote, too! Once everything has been decided an email will go out to those that RSVP'd as well as updates to the BU DC alumni website. The game will begin in the early afternoon.
There is also a possibility that other residents and their respective alumni clubs (Butler University, Ithaca College, Notre Dame, University of Miami of Ohio, James Madison University) might also join us, either way it'll be a great way to network with alumni in the area and meet current students who may return in a few months.

BU vs. Cornell Hockey
Madison Square Garden, NYC
Red Hot Hockey! Let the rivalry continue!
In a rekindling of one of college hockey's oldest rivalries in one of the most iconic venues in the world, Boston University will face Cornell University in a non-conference NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey match-up at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 24, 2007.
The BUCornell rivalry began on Jan. 10, 1925, with a 7-2 victory by the Terriers, and includes two match-ups in the NCAA title game (1967, 1972). Each school is steeped in hockey tradition. BU has won the national championship four times (1971, 1972, 1978 and 1995), while Cornell has claimed the title twice (1967, 1970). However, the schools have met only sporadically since BU left the ECAC to join Hockey East in 1984-85.
More information is available through Agganis Arena. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
A number of Washington area alumni are planning to attend this event however attendance is on an individual basis (i.e.- this is not a Club organized event).
