Ancient Scribes Speak to Modern Citizens
National Press Club - The Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library

Attendance is FREE, but e-mail tickets are required by writing to opus@press.org. Please reserve early, as space is limited.

As scholars and authors, Paula Fredriksen and James J. O'Donnell are eminent historians and chroniclers of the changes -- social, religious, military, economic -- that ended the ancient Greco-Roman world and laid foundations on which our own world is built. O'Donnell's THE RUIN OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, commended by Madeleine Albright and Lewis Lapham, offers new theories on the story of Rome's demise; while National Jewish Book Award winner Fredriksen's AUGUSTINE AND THE JEWS, recently featured in TIME Magazine, re-examines Christianity's difficult sibling rivalry with Judaism.  They will share the stage to speak of how civilizations end -- and renew themselves -- and to explore what this historical inquiry can mean for journalists and all citizens on issues such as immigration, warfare, religious strife, and international relations.

BU Alumnus Peter Carslon discusses his new book "K Blows Top'

BU Washington Center
2807 Connecticut Ave NW
(Red line--Woodley Park Metro)

K Blows TopBoston University alumnus Peter Carlson will speak about his upcoming book K Blows Top which chronicles the 1959 U.S. visit of Nikita Khrushchev. Carlson is a former feature writer and columnist for The Washington Post, where he wrote the weekly column “The Magazine Reader.”

Published for the fiftieth anniversary of the trip, K Blows Top is a work of history that reads like a Vonnegut novel. This cantankerous communist’s road trip took place against the backdrop of the fifties with the shadow of the hydrogen bomb hanging over his visit like the Sword of Damocles. It was one of the strangest exercises in international diplomacy ever conducted. Khrushchev told jokes, threw tantrums, sparked a riot in a San Francisco supermarket, wowed the coeds in a home economics class in Iowa, and ogled actress Shirley MacLaine.

Carlson, a very funny writer and a great raconteur, will talk about researching and writing the book which is due out in June.

Kiss Me I'm Irish - March BUYAHH
Ireland's Four Fields  (Cleveland Park metro)

Take the opportunity to mix and mingle with local fellow alumni over a Guinness and some Irish chips with curry sauce. 12 oz. rail drinks are set at $4 a pop and $12 for 72oz pitchers of draft beer. Save seats for you and your friends because when the happy hour is over, the bar's Pub Quiz begins at 9pm!

Four Fields is located at 3412 Connecticut Ave NW. From the Cleveland Park Metro stop (red line), walk down one block south on Connecticut and there you are! Parking is also available.

King of the Jews promoOlney Theatre, BU Professor Leslie Epstein’s play, King of the Jews  Pre-show reception with Professor Epstein from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Showtime starts at 7:45 pm.

This 1979 classic tells the darkly humorous story of I.C. Trumpelman, a man whose fancy determines the fate of others. Chosen as the head of a Judenrat, Trumpelman thrives on the power granted him and creates an authoritarian regime of his own within the ghetto. By turns a con man, charismatic leader and merciless dictator, Trumpelman reveals himself as an extraordinarily complex protagonist.

Leslie Epstein photoHow I turned my novel into a play ?

By Leslie Epstein

Leslie Epstein, whose father and uncle, Philip G. and Julius J. Epstein, wrote Arsenic and Old Lace, Casablanca, and many other classics of the golden era of films, is the author of eight works of fiction, including Pandaemonium and Pinto and Sons. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts, and has for many years directed the Creative Writing Program at Boston University.

I began as a playwright, not a fiction writer. The first words I can remember writing were in a drama for the Cub Scouts. This guy comes out pushing a cart and starts yelling, "Ice cream! Ice cream! Every flavor! Vanilla! Chocolate! Strawberry! Lamb chop!"

Why didn't I? Laziness, I fear. My first plays weren't taken anywhere, but my first short stories were. I began to write more and more of them, they all got printed, and I just let inertia -- or is it momentum? or is it ego? -- carry me entirely into the world of fiction. Not that I didn't look back: Careful readers will find a play hidden, or not so hidden, in each of my novels, including "King of the Jews," in which an entire long chapter is devoted to a staging of "Macbeth." I had, it seems, plenty of nostalgia for the craft I had left behind.

Read the whole article in All About Jewish Theatre.

(Red line--Woodley Park Metro)

On Thursday March 26th at 7 p.m. the Boston University Washington Center will welcome Boston Globe Washington Bureau Chief Peter Canellos to talk about Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy”.

The book, written by a team of Boston Globe reporters, considers Kennedy’s reputation as the most powerful senator of the last half century and the nation's keeper of traditional liberalism.

This revealing and intimate biography traces the youngest Kennedy brother’s political career complete with tragedies and missteps. He was once a symbol of youthful folly and nepotism, but Ted Kennedy transformed himself in his later years into a symbol of wisdom and perseverance. Perceptive and carefully reported, drawing heavily from candid interviews with the Kennedy family and inner circle, Last Lion captures magnificently the life and historic achievements of Ted Kennedy, as well as the personal redemption that he has found in later life.

DC Cares logoGreater DC Cares Servathon

For the sixth year in a row Boston University alumni will join thousands of volunteers across the region to take part in the Greater DC Cares Servathon and help make our community a better place to live.  Our project will be at a nonprofit or school in the metro area, most likely in DC.  The workday is short, only 9am to 12:30pm, and it’s followed by a big party with free burgers, hotdogs and beer.

Like a Walkathon, Servathon volunteers raise pledges to support their day of service.  You do not need to meet any fundraising goals however, if you wish to do so the Servathon website provides information and tools to help you in this effort.

A $25 registration fee covers project supplies, t-shirt, snacks and water.  The Servathon generates one third of DC Cares annual budget and allows the organization to support community volunteerism year-round.

Registration is easy, just go to our team’s website: http://servathon2009.kintera.org/DCBostonU

Our goal this year is to recruit 30 volunteers and raise $1000.  We hope you’ll join us!

Questions?  Please contact Erik at erikenger@onebox.com or Mary Aquino Mary.Aquino@gmail.com

Greater DC Cares helps connect volunteers to non-profits all year long, if you’re interested check out www.dc-cares.org.  They offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from and you go as often or as little as you like.

I hope you all have had a fantastic summer. It's been quite a year with all the events that we have had from the White House/Capitol Hill Tours to the BUYAHH and CAN League, Newseum and Servathon events all highlighted by the incredible NCAA Championship win right here in DC. None which would have happened without the support and commitment of alumni volunteers. I'd like to take the opportunity to extend an invitation to any and all alumni interested in participating with the DC alumni chapter and having you join us for a Fall planning session to lay out the vision and schedule of events for the rest of the year and first part of 2010. We really want to further diversify our programs and in order to do so, we need your support.

So please join me on Saturday, October 3 at 11:00 am at the BU Washington Center located at 2807 Connecticut Avenue (across from Cathedral/ Woodley Park-Zoo/ Adams Morgan Metro Stop)

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP me at paul.chen@smartneighborhood.net if you are interested in attending.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
